I was driving this afternoon and I was switching stations and heard the national anthem. Imagine the most countrified version of the national anthem possible. I thought, "What is this?" Maybe they're singing this before some NASCAR event. And then it turned out that's exactly what it was. The Bojangles 500 in North Carolina. So that seemed a little weird. But then I thought, "Wait. Are they going to do radio play-by-play of a car race?" Yup, that's what happened. You've got to be a big NASCAR fan to listen to it on radio. However, 99.9% of this part of the country seems to be, so I guess it works. By the way, except that its car racing, I don't even know what "NASCAR" means. I did recognize some names during the race - Kyle and Kurt(?) Bush, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhart, and Danica Patrick.
This must be a regular deal because they said they were broadcasting as part of the Motor Racing Network. Another odd thing. They felt the need to say that there could be no using their telecast without express written consent. Is there really a lot of people recording a car race on radio and then after the race is run, reselling it? I doubt it that would be a problem. But for that matter, I wouldn't have thought there was a market for a radio broadcast of a car race to begin with. Toto, I don't think we're in Oregon anymore.
