Bad Movies

Birdman won the Oscar for best movie this year. I heard before in some interview that it might win. The interviewee said that it was about acting and the people that vote for the Oscar would be into that. I guess they were, because it won, but its a bad movie. I'm pretty sure it is, anyway. I only made it through a third of it. The only other movie I can remember only being able to make it through part of is Biodome. It starred the extremely unfunny Pauly Shore, who lowered his standards, if such a thing were possible, by being in it.

I almost had another nominee - The Green Berets. I saw that a couple weeks ago. It starred John Wayne and it was made during the Vietnam War era. It was clearly a propaganda picture supporting the war. Maybe it just balances all the other Vietnam propaganda movies that were biased in the opposite direction. I just don't like movies where they are trying to get you to feel a certain way. I think Jerry Seinfeld had a philosophy about his TV show - No hugging and no learning. That's how I like my entertainment.

The Green Berets doesn't go on my worst movie list because 1.) It had John Wayne in it, 2.) Good theme song, 3.) It got better as it went along.

The first 45 minutes though were brutally preachy. There was a press conference that was so lopsided and preachy that was tough to watch without wincing at times. The Green Berets themselves were always joking around. They were laughing, smiling, and joking around
all the time. I guess Vietnam was a much happier place than I was led to believe. They were just having a great time.

Thankfully they started actually fighting after a while and it turned into the kind of movie you watch a John Wayne movie to see. From what I've read it was pretty roundly criticized at the time. I would think so.

I read something about the so-called worst movies of all-time. Some of the ones that you hear about losing a lot of money - Heaven's Gate, Waterworld, etc. - weren't necessarily all that bad. A lot of times they lost money because something went wrong. Maybe some group goes on strike in the middle of the movie and it ends up costing a ton of money to make. Then all people can talk about is how much money the movie lost and they assume its because it was a bad movie.

However, that wasn't the case with Birdman or Biodome. They were just bad. Bad, bad, bad.
