Daniel Boone Show

I couldn't sleep last night. Whenever I laid down I got all stuffed up. So I would get up. Then I gave up and just started watching TV. It turns out they are now showing the old episodes of Daniel Boone. That is just awesome. I've seen three episodes so far. Daniel, played by Fess Parker (dreamy), made the big acting stretch of going from playing Davy Crockett to playing Daniel Boone. I think he even wore the same coonskin cap. Somewhere along that time I think he was the dad in Ole Yeller, which is basically the same Davy/Daniel character, but without the cap. By the way, if it wasn't for the social ostracism, I'd be wearing a coonskin cap all the time. I wonder who had the very first idea to wear one of those? Its a bold fashion statement. Anyway, I have a few possible improvements for the show.

The theme song is really catchy, but the lyrics need work. I had to look them up to make sure I heard them right. "He fought for America to make all Americans free." Kentucky wasn't part of America then. He actually moved out of the colonies during the revolutionary war. Also "All Americans" is an ok phrase as long as you don't count slaves and Indians. And "What a Boone. What a doer, What a dream come'a truer was he." Wow. Worst TV lyrics ever. (Move over Brady Bunch Theme.)

I spent the last couple years in Kentucky. The outdoor scenes clearly aren't filmed there. It looks like it's a short drive from Hollywood. I'm sure that's what they did. Some of the outdoor scenes aren't even outdoor. They're clearly inside a Hollywood soundstage with fake rocks and trees with a painted background. It looks like they're reusing scenes from F-Troop episodes.

Less talky, more shooty. Daniel didn't become a legend by talking people to death. Also, everyone that does get shot in the show falls forward. Why? That violates the laws of physics.

One final point. Take a little extra time and find actual American Indians to play the role of Indians on the show. Taking obvious Caucasians and sticking some feathers in their hair is not convincing.

Just some thoughts. It might seem like I hate the show. I do not. I'm already planning my next Daniel Boone Marathon.
