Old Music

I got some CD's from Amazon this week. All the songs are oldies, although the CD's have been released in the last couple years. One is Paul McCartney doing songs his parents liked, thus he heard a lot, growing up. Another CD was Art Garfunkel. Again, old songs. By old I mean really old - Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, etc. I know a lot of those. Even though they're before my time, I like hearing those songs. The better songs are on Paul's CD, but Art is the better singer. Art has the kind of voice that you could see him being a big star in the 30's or 40's. I don't think Paul would have made it in the crooner age. Best song on Paul's album (I'm careful not to use the word record, but I'm not sure they're called albums any more either) is It's Only a Paper Moon. Art's is Someone to Watch Over Me. But its all good.

A lot of singers do some kind of old music album after they've past their commercial prime years. Linda Rondstat did two CD's in that style a few years ago. I have those, too. Rod Stewart has made a killing in this area, but I haven't gotten any of his. I just can by (or buy) him doing those songs. He was a wild rocker before, so you don't get to make a quantum leap into easy listening just to make money.

In a happy coincidence I thought I would see if Art was touring, or even still alive. Turns out he's both. He's only a hundred miles away from me in a couple of months, so I got tickets. I heard he's had some voice issues and has to sing lower now. But then I heard those problems have cleared up. Whatever. However he sounds, it'll be great. I'll be sure to do a thorough report when the time comes.
