The Captain and Tennille are getting a divorce. It turns out love won't keep them together. (That line has probably been used countless times this past week, but how can I not use it?) I saw them in Reno once. They did fine, as I recall, but nothing spectacular. They seemed like a clone of the Carpenters, who I loved, but not as good as them. Toni Tennille wasn't nearly the singer Karen Carpenter was, and I don't know how you have less charisma than Richard, but the Captain did.
I wasn't a big fan to begin with, but I like seeing singers that have a bunch of hit records. They had hits like Love Will Keep Us Together, Do That to Me One More Time, and the very disturbing Muskrat Love.
How do you get a divorce after forty years anyway? If there were irreconcilable differences, wouldn't they have surfaced by then. And if they aren't all that irreconcilable, maybe you could just tough it out. And are you going to do a lot better now? That captain hat made you look like a geek when you were a young guy. And now its got to be worse? Its not the babe magnet you think it is.
Barry Gibb was on the Today Show. Andy, Robin, and Maurice are all gone now. I knew about three of them, but I didn't know that Robin had died. How did that get passed me? Same thing with as with the Captain and Tennille - I wasn't a big fan - especially of their disco era stuff. I saw them in Portland and they were really spectacular. They were at the height of their fame, so it was pretty exciting. I remember they started with Knights on Broadway. Then it was Jive Talkin', Stayin' Alive, and assorted disco hits. (g's were not used during the disco era.) My favorite part was when they did a medley of their older stuff.
Apparently Barry is now going on tour again. It wouldn't be like the concert I saw, but it would still be really good.
