Entertainment Tonight's theme of the top 100 of everything, looked at television. Someone had written how cable stations like HBO and Showtime had an unfair advantage when it came to winning awards. They got to count their shows as TV, but they were really more like movies. They have big budgets, can attract big name stars, and their "seasons" are usually about 12 episodes worth. They also aren't under the same FCC requirements so their programming can be more edgy. Incidentally, I hate "edgy" stuff. The other TV networks are putting on shows 24 hours a day. HBO might be)on 24 hours a day, but most of that time is spent rerunning the same 4 or 5 movies. Those kind of shows competing with regular TV is like the scum in the top 10 list of home run hitters of all-time that did it with the help of steroids. I won't get started on that (again), but it seems like unfair advantages in each case.
So when the HBO show "The Wire" (a show I've never even heard of) gets ranked as the #1 show of all-time, I find that problematic. With that, let's check out their top 10.
1. The Wire
2. The Simpsons (Excellent choice)
3. Seinfeld (Excellent choice)
4. Mary Tyler Moore Show (Excellent)
5. The Sopranos (HBO show)
6. All in the Family (Excellent)
7. The Andy Griffith Show (Excellent)
8. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Anyone making another show about vampires should be shot.)
9. Mad Men (Never seen it.)
10. Your Show of Shows. (Never seen it, but it is from the 50's and supposed to have been great, so it has my blessing.)
Here are some problems I have with EW's top 100 list.
#17 - Roseanne. I don't know enough about acting to tell if somebody is a good or great actor. However, I think I can spot bad acting. Roseanne is like the worst actress in television history it seems to me.
#83 - Oz. An HBO show. I saw part of an episode once. Spoiler alert. It had me confused. Apparently, this has little in common with movie The Wizard of OZ.
#100 - The Brady Bunch. Seriously?
I also have a problem with The Dick Van Dyke show being nowhere on their list.
Now shows they had ranked that where pleasant surprises because I love these shows:
#19 - Arrested Development.
#38 - The Bob Newhart Show.
#51 - The West Wing.
#56 - 30 Rock.
#80 - The Office.
#89 - Mystery Science Theater 3000.
