I saw game 7 of the NBA Finals in Reno, Nevada, which turned out to be fun. I watched the first quarter
eating a dive that happened to have a small TV that had the game on. It was across from a motel that advertised that their rooms had phones and color TV, if that gives you any idea how up-scale the neighborhood was. There was a guy behind me that sounded just like Zoidberg from Futurama, which was entertaining in itself.
After the first quarter I walked to Circus Circus where they had the game on a big-screen TV. By big-screen I mean the players were pretty much actual size. It was standing room only. Then I wastched the second half on a TV at another casino. Again, big-screen, but this time I got a seat and me and my 20 new friends watched it together. It was pretty much a cross section of Heat and Spurs fans. Most were really into it, although it was clear from their comments that they didn't really follow basketball and had pledged their allegiance to their team in just the past few days.
Just to clarify my philosophy, I have decided that the idea of being a committed life-long fan is just too much work and, at times, too painful. The Portland Trailblazers and Seattle Mariners have disappointed me in the past with their losing records and/or their arrest records. I am now free to play the field. So, let's go Heat!! I still feel I have to have some connection to root for a team. I watched the Heat play in person last year, so that's good enough for me. In college basketball, I live most the year about 2 hours from University of Kentucky. In baseball, my team is Cincinnati due to they were my team growing up and because of my life-long fondness for Pete Rose. I'll stick with the U of O Ducks. I'm already looking forward to the fall to see how the Ducks will again almost, but not quite win the college football championship.
Speaking of Pete - being in Reno, I thought I should place a bet on the game. I ended up chickening out. I'll save that story for next blog.
