I've been doing my blog roughly on Sundays and Wednesdays. I need to pick up the pace at least for a little while because things are happening so quickly. To catch up, I'll try to do every other day at least for a while. So anyway, we're at Day 2 of the journey East. Today its Montana, a little bit of Wyoming and South Dakota. I'm trying to get to Kentucky, but also stop off at some interesting places along the way. First stop today is at Custer's Last Stand. It was awesome. I already knew alot about it so I could skip the ranger talks and the movie, etc. I just ran around taking pictures. Donna and the cat stayed in the car, neither one sharing my interest in massacres. To save time, I literally did run around. There was a three-quarter of a mile path to the bottom of the hill. I ran down it and then up it. On the way up, I could pretend I was one of the attacking Indians. How cool is that? Its just like the fantasies I had when I was 6 years old playing with my little green army men. Of the two pictures here, one is from the top of the hill and one is near the bottom.
Custer had divided up his cavalry into three seperate units. I knew about one section crossing the river and climbing a hill, but how you imagine things isn't always how it is. Most of how I imagined it is how it turned out to be, but several things made a lot more sense after I could see the layout in person. Custer was already a famous civil war hero and Indian fighter. That's why his being defeated was such a big deal at the time. He was a good general. I don't think there really was alot he was going to be able to do to change the situation.
We also so Devil's Tower and Mt. Rushmore this day. Those were cool, but I'll have to save that for a later blog.
