Best Day of My Life

One of the Bee Gee's died this past week. I saw them once. They weren't my favorite group, especially their disco stuff. I saw them at that time when they were huge, which was their disco stuff. I was going to Portland State and they were doing a concert in Portland. It was at the time they were being compared to the Beatles. It was just after Saturday Night Fever and they were on fire. They did all their older songs along with their big hits at the time - Jive Talkin', You Should be Dancin', Stayin' Alive ..., (For some reason, their songs never managed to include that final "g".) A little too falsetto and discoey for my taste, but exciting nonetheless. That was at 8:00 p.m.

Its the best day of my life because, on top of that, earlier that evening there was an old-timers' game before a Portland Beavers game. I don't know how they swung getting them here, but it had the best line-up ever. Check it out: Ernie Banks, Maury Wills, Bob Feller, Whitey Ford, Sam McDowell, Willie Mays, and Hank Aaron. He didn't play, but Joe Dimaggio was there as their manager or something. If you don't know baseball, trust me, those are big names. The tickets were the same as a regular Beavers game which was about $3 and I had front row seats. Hank Aaron hit a home run. At one point, there was a man on third and tagging up on a fly ball to centerfield. Willie Mays caught it and threw a strike to home plate to get the guy out. It was an unbelievable play. It was a three inning game, so I could see the old-timers game and then rush over to see the Bee Gees.

Anyway, best day of my life. I know what some are thinking - What about your wedding, what about the birth of your children? Sorry, but nope. Not even close.
