I ran in the Moore Park Mountain Run yesterday. It was 3.1 miles and almost all of it on trails. I used to survey the field before a race to judge my chance of winning. I'm not sure exactly when this transition happened, but now I look around to make sure I won't come in last. (There's an 80 year old, a couple of walkers, someone limping before the race even started - OK, I think I'm good.) One time in a cross-country race in college I got the worst side ache ever. I might have come in last that day. I don't remember. It actually went pretty well. I was 35 seconds faster than last year. I almost tripped over a rock and went sprawling, but I didn't. And I wasn't even close to last. All in all, a good day.
Speaking of sports, I'm pulling for the Atlanta Braves since I saw them this summer, but now they're causing me a lot of pain. They're folding like Superman on laundry day. There are three games left in the season and they have a one game lead over St. Louis. They had a ten game lead on them a month ago. In church yesterday I figured out the probability they can hang on. Incidentally, God is OK with me doing that - He's a big baseball fan. I think he roots for the Angels. (Rimshot.) Anyway, a 66% chance we hold them off, and an 89% chance we at least tie. However, I did not take into account our next three games are against maybe the best team in baseball - the Phillies. St. Louis is playing the worst team - The Astros. It could get interesting, but not in a good way.
