Plan 9 from Outer Space

I watched "Plan 9 From Outer Space". It is universally heralded as the worst movie of all time. I'll have to agree. It is just awful. But now, that's what is so great about it. The director was Ed Wood, who has been called the worst director of all time. Johnny Depp played him in a movie of his life - appropriately called "Ed Wood".

It's a DVD I own. It's great because you can set it to have interesting notes about it while the movie plays. Also there is a commentary track by Mike Nelson, who is hilarious. He was the main guy on Mystery Science Theater 3000. My two favorite jobs to have had would have been to be a writer on MST3000 or a writer of the Top 10 lists for David Letterman.

I read about the movie on IMDB.com. That is a great site by the way. You look up a movie and read about interesting facts and "goofs" in the movie. The goofs section for this movie just went on and on. However, I didn't really need that. The goofs are plain enough to see with a casual viewing of the movie. Let me share just a few with you.

  • People will be out in the daytime. They go on a short walk and suddenly its pitch black.
  • Flying saucers are clearly miniatures and suspended by string.
  • Bela Lugosi was a famous actor in scary movies. He died during the filming of this one. So he is some scenes. And a person with his arm covering most of his face (I'm serious) plays him in the rest of the movie.
  • The graveyard has "headstones" that are clearly cardboard and move when someone bumps into them.
  • The curtain to the cockpit of a plane is clearly a shower curtain. (Yes, I know I'm using the word "clearly" a lot, but I can't help it.)
  • The instruments on the wall behind the pilots consists of a slide rule and a clipboard.
  • The pilots look like they are sitting on stools or boxes or something rather than chairs.
  • The flying "saucer", when on the ground, is rectangular.
There are more. Plenty more. Go get the movie and see for yourself. You won't be disappointed.
