I recorded and then watched the last of the Triple Crown today. It ended up happening, so I got to see it. Its the first time I've seen a horse win the Triple Crown. It's pretty rare. It's happened something like 15 times in the past century.
I'm not into horse racing, but I went to Churchill Downs and watched a day of horse racing once. They have a couple weeks worth, a couple times a year. It costs like $5 and you can just watch horses run all day. They have a race every half hour or so. Not many people go to it - just tourists like me and addicted gamblers. Its almost as cool as going to the actual Kentucky Derby. For that I think you have to be rich to get into the stands, and if female, wear a big hat. You can stand in the infield for $50. I actually thought about it, but you would only see moments of the race as the horses fly by.
When I was in Kentucky I also saw where Man-of-War was buried. He was a famous horse. By "buried", they apparently bury the heart and hooves and burn the rest of the animal. I swear, that's what I was told. That just doesn't seem right. You get to the top of the horse racing profession and that's how you end up? For that matter I bet Justified, the horse that won the Triple Crown, has no idea he did anything special today. Is he running for glory? I don't think so. He's thinking, "The sooner I complete this lap, the sooner this jerk on my back will stop whipping me." By the way, I met Funny Cide at a horse park in Kentucky. Seriously, he was a Kentucky Derby winner. He's retired and living the good life. But I got to meet him and talk to him a little bit. I felt a little dumb, but it was cool. Again, he has no idea he's special.
I was at a baseball all-star game once. That is the only big-time sporting event I've ever been at. I should go to some big deal event like a playoff game, Super Bowl, all star game, Triple Crown event, etc. It would take a lot of money and be really crowed, but maybe just once. Or maybe just a regular game, but get really good seats. I've been to a lot of games and concerts, but almost always in the cheap seats. Plus I would wear a big hat.
