I finished Seinfeld today. I mean I totally finished it. I've seen every episode. It's taken a while. I've bought DVDs of seasons every so often. You can get them pretty cheap now as its been gone for several years now.
Some episodes just make me cringe for various reasons. Maybe George does something so tremendously embarrassing its hard to even watch - that kind of thing. But the good ones are super great. They'll have two or three plot lines going on that don't seem connected at all and then they'll all come together at the end. I found on those that if you miss the first 5 minutes or so, you're done for. You get to the end and you think, "What just happened?"
I rewatched the final episode. Most people didn't like it. It think for a couple reasons. One is that it was pretty linear. There wasn't all the weaving in and out of the story lines like they became famous for.
But I think a second reason is they had all the past guests on. They were all testifying against the four of them. A lot of people didn't identify with them, though. Even though it was the number one show when it ended, it didn't start out that way. So a lot tuned in to the final that didn't know Soup Nazi, or Bubble Boy, etc. It was also right about the time when people were starting to have a lot of choices in life. When I grew up I think we had two or three channels. I think we had the option of cable, but that was always shot down.
The number one show used to be watched by tons of people, I think. The Beverly Hillbillies, Gunsmoke, Lucy - they were what you watched. It was like I could watch Gunsmoke or a rerun of a Popeye cartoon. Or you could just sit in my chair and stare off into space. Now its hundreds of channels, the internet, phones, video games, etc, etc.
So people don't have nearly as much in common anymore. What is the number one show now? I don't even know. But I'm sure its got a devoted following. Since its number one its following must be bigger than other shows, but I don't think its nearly as high a percentage as those shows from decades ago.
Anyway, I love you Jerry Seinfeld. Long live your show.
