I'm pretty sure I've ranted about this before, but let's revisit this commercials issue. I have tried my news experiment the last couple of days. I've taped the evening news so I could watch it without commercials. I was surprised that there were no commercials for the first 13 minutes. After that, though, lots of them. Bunch of commercials, one news story, bunch of commercials, one news story, bunch of commercials, one news story - that was the rest of the program. But that's why I taped it. Worked like a charm.
The following is true. I taped an NBA game. The last one minute, three seconds took 20 minutes to play. There was a 15 second span that took 8 minutes. Ever see NBA games where at the end very few people are left? This is why. The same is true with people turning off their TV sets, too, I bet. If a team is well ahead, not insurmountably ahead, just ahead comfortable, the exodus begins. They could fix that if they wanted to, but they don't. Time their "20 second" time outs sometime. The buzzer goes off after 20 seconds and they just keep talking in their huddle. The NBA suits think people will put up with all the time-outs / commercials, but I don't think so.
I have a game on right now that I'm not really watching. I notice there is 2:41 to play and there are 7 time outs left the teams can use. I'm guessing another half hour of "basketball".
My fave show, PTI, is taped every day. Today, while I was fast forwarding I thought I would count the commercials. I might be off by a little, but at one point I counted 11 ads in a row.
They think they need more commercials to make more money. But the more commercials, the more likely people will tape shows to get passed those commercials. Death spiral.
