Here is something cooler than you would think it might be - the Bonneville Salt Flats. You wouldn't think there would be a lot on sights on the road between Salt Lake City and Winnemucca, Nevada. You, my friend, would be pleasantly surprise with miles and miles of salt. I had heard of it before since that is where they usually run cars to get land speed records. There was a turn-off to go to that area. Its a marked of distance that the cars would be timed on. I don't know if they would actually let you take your car onto it or not. My little Dodge Neon was talking some smack about how he could probably set a new record if he wanted to. He knew I didn't have time to go there so I think that's why he was talking so tough.
We drove past a plant that had the Morton Salt logo on it and it was harvesting or mining (or whatever it is called) salt. That was cool. I guess I never had given a lot of thought of how we get salt anyway.
Right at the edge of the salt flat is maybe the best rest stop ever. You can walk right out there onto the salt. Most of it is rock hard, but in some places you can scoop some up. I did of course and is now displayed proudly at my house.
As you might guess, the salt flats are completely flat for miles, but it is a little bumpy, so it seems like that wouldn't be a good surface to be going 500 miles per hour on. But at that speed maybe it doesn't matter.
I have no idea why anyone would, but if your destination is ever Winnemucca, Nevada, check out the salt flats. You'll be glad you did.
