I did a little research on this topic. Each year we spend more than we take in. That is the annual deficit. Add up all the yearly deficits and you get the total national debt. That is the difference between the deficit and the debt. Wow, that was really easier than I thought it would be. I took a year of economics in college and never learned that.
Another thing I wanted to learn is what president has had the most debt attributed to his administration. Turns out that is a tough one to answer. They had three different ways you can look at it. I could explain it to you, but ... Oh wait, I can't explain it to you. It seemed pretty complicated, so let's move on. Another issue with this is - Do you count the first year of a president's term? They do, but they probably shouldn't as he's inheriting the budget set by the outgoing president.
With that said, from what I could see the big deficiteers were:- Franklin Roosevelt - At least percentage-wise. He had his New Deal to get us out of the depression. Also fighting WWII didn't come cheap.
- George W. Bush - Big tax cuts at the start of his tenure, 9-11,then two wars, and the financial meltdown at the end.
- Barak Obama - I don't think his is as easy to tell. He certainly inherited the financial mess that George W. had, plus the continuing wars, and launching Obama Care.
So those three I suppose are most to blame. However "blame" is a rough word to use as most of those things were out of their control.
They have some fun games on the internet in which you try to balance the budget. It's harder than it seems. Its easy to find some piddling stuff. "Congress gets free haircuts? What? We need to end that!" Fine, but that is like 0.0000001% of the budget. The stuff you can cut that really makes a difference, like the military and social security, are also the cuts that likely will cause you to not get re-elected.
In my administration,
- I think we end the many handouts and invest that money into jobs. That is what FDR did originally with the New Deal. Everyone that wants a job can have one, but no one just gets a check in the mail.
- Let's cap income. Do we really need billionaires? Let's say if you make more than $5 million a year, all the extra goes to the government. I just looked this up. Do you know there are 585 billionaires in the U.S.? What could they possibly do with all that money? And get this, there are 11 million millionaires. What the what? You can keep 5 million and do your best to live off that, but the government gets the rest.
- No monetary free stuff for illegal aliens. This is probably not politically correct, but people come here and they get free public education, health care, etc. We need to end that. And that seems a lot more humane than those people putting their and their children's lives in danger by crossing deserts to obtain those things. And if we did that we wouldn't need a wall. There is 5 billion right there. Ca-ching.
- National sales tax. Not on everything. Medicine and food and basic cars, etc are exempt. But mansions and yachts and what-not get taxed big time.
- Last but not least, no more free congressional hair cuts.
