Time Person of the Year

Time had 10 finalists for Person of the Year. This is always interesting. I almost never agree with them. Let's look at the history of this. First of all, some ground rules.

  1. It has to be a person - not a group, not an inanimate object.
  2. You have to be important in the present and at least somewhat in the future. You can be important in a negative way. Hitler was Man of the Year once. You have to be important in some way though.
  3. It has to be for something you have done, not something has happened to you. I feel bad for individuals or groups that had something bad happen to them, but that doesn't get you person of the year.
Hear were this year's nominees:
  1. Donald Trump - Pretty good choice. The president always is. Meets all the criteria. He won last year, though, so probably not.
  2. Separated families - Violates rules 1 and 3.
  3. Vladimir Putin - He was my choice a year or two ago. Too late now, though. Seems like he's be kind of laying low this year.
  4. Robert Mueller - This was my choice, even before I saw Time's short list. Depending on what his report ends up finding, he's in the running for 2019.
  5. Ryan Coogler - He directed Black Panther. Come on Time. Now you're just messing with me.
  6. Christine Blasey Ford - Violates #3.
  7. Jamal Khashoggi - He's the diplomat that was murdered. Violates #3. And if he did win, he's not around to enjoy it.
  8. March for Our Lives Activists - As protest groups go, kind of self serving. Also kids, do the math on what the probability is that you will be killed in a school shooting. The best way to end the school shootings is to quit putting them on the news when they happen.
  9. Moon Jae-in - The leader of South Korea. This is a mystery to me.
  10. Meghan Markle - Yes, she's delightful. But irrelevant. A lot would have to happen for her to be queen. Even if she was, unless her husband died, he would be the top dog as king and even that is just a figurehead position in a country who's best days are behind her.
Time Person of the Year Fun Facts

First one - Charles Lindberg
Most times winning - Franklin Roosevelt - 3 times
First time rule #1 was violated - 1950, The American Fighting Man
First time rule #2 was violated - Wallis Simpson (The British king abdicated to marry her. So?)
Almost worst choice ever - They apparently almost went with Dumbo as Mammal of the Year. It would have violated all my rules and then some. Also, not a real thing. Otherwise, fine.
