Have I ever ranted in my blog about tipping? I feel I must have. Maybe I haven't because its just so obviously a scourge on humanity that should be universally criticized. In case it isn't, let me lead the way.
I was in a place today serving yogurt. By "serving" I mean they handed me a cup. From there, it was self serve. Then when I pay, there is a tip jar. Or to pay by credit card and it gives options for how much to tip. But I believe I did most of the work here. How about you tip me?
I was in another place once. I got a muffin and a drink. They handed me a muffin, and I had to get my own bottle of Coke from their cooler. Again confronted with tipping when I paid.
And what's the deal in restaurants tipping the people that serve you. The waiter/waitress is least deserving person there. What about the cook, the busboy, the janitor sweeping up the restaurant after closing, or the guy that scrubs the toilet? They don't get a tip. Just Miss Can I Take Your Order.
Who should get a tip? Beside the obvious answer of "No one", we could go with the police, firemen, teachers, or the military. But there are no tips for them. We've used our disposable income tipping restaurant people. Tipping a policeman could be construed as bribery, so that is probably out anyway.
And tipping is up. Used to be 10%, but now 15% due to inflation. No, no, no. Making to a percent takes care of the inflation issue. Its just another money grab.
What are cashiers to do? How about get another job. Ask for a raise. I don't know. Its really not society's problem. They could get a higher wage from their employers. I would pay it gladly. OK, not gladly, but I would pay it.
I could go on with other reasons to end tipping. I've done enough. And no more ranting for a few weeks.
