I think its Day V. I'm starting to lose count now. If I'm right, it's two cool things today - The Uffizi Gallery and a church with a bunch of famous dead people.
Let's start with the church. As you must know, I'm into this. Not in a morbid way. Its just like having a collection. Finding famous people's burial places is kind of like a scavenger hunt. We hit the mother lode on this one. I won't spell all these right, but Machiavelli, Michaelangelo, Gallileo, Rossini (William Tell / Lone Ranger Overture), Dante ('s Inferno). All in one spot. Bingo. St. Peter's has a bunch of famous burial places, but they're all popes. Name three popes. That's what I thought. There is a great cemetery in L.A., Westminster in London, Arlington in D.C. This church, Santa Croce maybe aren't as good as those, but it's good.
I kind of collect classic art, too. Not necessarily good art. I have no idea what makes for good art. But there are certain paintings everyone has seen. I like seeing those. For example, the Mona Lisa. In famous art museums I've been in I've made a whirlwind tour looking for famous paintings. I can't be slowed down appreciating art. I'm on a mission. Great places are the Art Institute in Chicago, Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan in N.Y., The Louvre. I've been in all of them. Probably for a grand total of 5 to 10 hours. I don't know how to appreciate art, but I'm pretty sure my method is not the way.
So the Uffizi Gallery is pretty darn good. Some pictures were famous to me because they have been pictures that have been used for covers of books I've read, e.g. Martin Luther, Gallileo. Some because they've been been satirized (not sure what that word means) on the Simpsons. And others just because I've seen them somewhere before. (My art appreciation class in college in which we had no tests or assignments. We just looked at slides of art. Best class ever.)
I spent quite a bit of time in this museum. Mostly because I couldn't find the exit. (True story.) A few of my Uffizi pictures of art are below.
