Beatle Facts

I've been blogging Beatle stuff, so I starting thinking about Beatle trivia I knew. I'm sure there is a lot more than this, but here are some, I think, interesting things.

They were fans of Buddy Holly. His band was Buddy Holly and the Crickets. Crickets - Beatles -- Get it? And they were going to go with the regular spelling of the bug "Beetles", but music has a Beat. Pure genius. Here is a good follow up question, What other bands are named after insects? I got nothing. There probably is some obscure band named The Spiders or The Arachnids, but they are, as I said, obscure, so I don't know.

OK, I just Googled it and there are a shocking number of websites devoted to this topic. Check these out.

  • The Scorpions - Yes. Heard of them.
  • Adam and the Ants - Yes. Heard of them.
  • The Hives - Disqualified. Not an insect.
  • Bee Gees - No. B.G stands for Brothers Gibb. Disqualified.
  • Papa Roach - I don't think they were going for an insect name here. Disqualified.
  • Iron Butterfly - Good one. Weren't they the Ina Godda Davida guys?
  • And the following made one website's list of 36 insect bands!!!!, none of which I heard of - W.A.S.P., Deer Tick, the Kingbees, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Insect Surfers, Spider (I knew it), Halo of Flies, The Katydid, etc, etc.
Back to the Beatles

Hey Jude, don't make it bad. John Lennon was going through a divorce and Paul felt bad for his son, Julian Lennon. So he wrote a song for Jules called Hey Jules. John thought he didn't want him to be linked with that so he asked Paul to change the name to Jude.

Then kind of the same thing with the song Eleanor Rigby. There was a priest named Father McKenzie in the song. Paul originally wrote it as Father McCartney. John thought Paul's dad might not like that, so the went to a phone book and decided to pick the next name after "McCartney".

There are probably more interesting Beatle stories, but those are ones I know.
