I'm listening to a book on CD called "What Happened". It's Hillary C's account of the past election and the big upset for Donald Trump. How did that happen? The polls and common sense would tell you he shouldn't have won. His claim to fame is being on TV and being rich. Reagan came out of movies, its true, but he was governor of California and had been involved in politics for decades before finally getting elected.
People like Gary Hart and Ed Muskie had their campaigns derailed for things looking minor compared to what Trump had going. Dan Quayle was ripped unmercifully because he misspelled potato. (Ironically I had "mispelled" in the last sentences. Whoever invented the red squiggly lines to show mistakes - bless you.) Jimmy Carter got attacked by a rabbit. All were major things for them.
Political stuff is interesting to me, even though I'm pretty much apolitical. I'm an independent and much happier for it. I just don't get that into it. (Last year I'm afraid I might have wasted my vote by writing in my buddy Dick Nixon.) People that are very political, either left or right, always seem to be in a bad mood. I don't need that. We could just get rid of parties. Democrats are usually just a little soft and forgiving and let's all just have a love-in. But Republicans are just the opposite. Maybe we need a party in between. These two parties just argue. The Democrats keep complaining the Republicans are jerks. That's no big secret. Everyone knows that. Let's move on to some constructive topics.
It really was a mind boggling upset. I wondered what Hillary thought. I was on a long trip by myself and stopped at a Barnes and Noble. I thought about getting a Ulysses Grant book on CD. $99. Seriously. Blank CD's cost like a dime. The whole thing probably cost a buck or two. How do they get away with that? So I went with the much more reasonably priced "What Happened".
I was afraid it would be a bunch of whining about things that happened to her. Yes, there was plenty of that. But there was a lot of non-whining material there also. She might have made a pretty good president. I don't know. Trump's campaign speech seemed to be, "Let's build a wall and look at how well I'm doing in the polls."
Hillary did get ripped off in a number of ways and I don't blame her for being upset. But Al Gore and others probably feel ripped off too and didn't write a big old book about it. I hope she can be content and not stew about this the rest of my life.
