Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day - The day of giving thanks. The title explains the day. Flag Day fits there too. Most other holidays, you wouldn't know what its about just from the title. Some, for example Boxing Day, no one seems to know. All I know is I heard its not about actual boxing. And at least one is the complete opposite - Labor Day, on which no one goes to work.

I used to watch football on this day. Today I saw literally maybe one minute. I used to watch the Macy's parade. Now its just a variety show of the latest Broadway plays. What percentage of the population actually sees Broadway plays? It can't be very big. I do like the balloons, but I'm not sitting through a bunch of pointless dancing around to see Yogi Bear float by.

I ran in something called the Turkey Trot. My strategy was one I learned playing a video game called The Decathlon. In the 400, I found a way to always win. Do a complete sprint for the first half lap. Then have your guy stop and rest until the second place runner catches up, then sprint the last half lap. (Actual 400 meter runners - I doubt this works in a real race.) Won every race. I did a modified form of that in the Turkey Trot. It was 3.1 miles, what real runners call a 5K, in a hilly park. I took it pretty easy on the uphill and flat sections. Then I was flying on the downhills. It worked pretty well I think, and it made it much more enjoyable.

We had the traditional turkey dinner at home. (I was again outvoted on going to Subway and getting the turkey subs.) I remember as a kid seeing the NBC logo on TV with the colorful turkey. I remember being very disappointed when I saw one in real life. The Big Bang Theory had a great idea. I started our first ever Tomhanksgiving. I believe they are called "chick flicks". Anyway the only one I've ever liked was the one I picked out,"You've Got Mail". It features two things that pretty much don't exist anymore - America On-Line and bookstores. When I was in NYC we went to the park that has the final romantic scene. Riverside Park is still there and that spot looks exactly the same. It's right across the river from the far less romantic location where Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton.

So an enjoyable Thanksgiving Day. On to Boxing Day.
