NFL Season Kickoff

It's the start of the NFL season. I guess it actually started Thursday, but most of the games are on Sunday. It used to be that all of the games were on Sunday, then a big innovation was Monday Night Football. Then there was Thursday Night Football, then came Sunday Night Football. I think they have a few Saturday games, too, at the end of the season.

I will probably watch my typical 20 hours of football this season. It is usually one game that I have taped, then I watch it fast forwarding through time-outs, injuries, half-time, etc. A lot of times I even fast forward the time between plays. You can watch a game in an hour. When I don't watch something pre-recorded I get so frustrated with all the commercials. I just give up after a while. I saw a Big Bang episode on a DVD - 18 minutes, 30 seconds. That means almost half of their so-called thirty minute show is commercials. I'm pretty sure years ago it was something like 3 or 4 minutes in a half hour show. They get greedy so they put in more ad time, but the more ad time they put in, the more likely people are recording and fast forwarding through them. I'm not sure how they aren't realizing that. .

I saw a little of a game today. There was

  • A touchdown.
  • Then an injury, so they cut to a commercial.
  • Then the meaningless extra point that isn't really even a play.
  • Then more commercials.
  • Then a kickoff, which was a touchback, so no action.
  • Although, someone did manage to injure themselves. So time for him to sit there, then slowly limp off (sorry to be so harsh, but come on people, I have things to do).
  • Then a play which led to the end of the quarter, so more commercials.
  • Then back to live action.
There was basically nothing going on for about ten minutes. Seriously, that all happened. OK, I might have some of the order wrong, but I remember all the stuff going on and being amazed at how little football was actually being played.

I was at a gym on a treadmill, so whatever was happening was just going to be a diversion for me, but still. I feel sorry for someone married to someone really into football. A couple of college games Saturday, then first Sunday Game, second Sunday game, Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football. With 3 to 4 hour games, that could take about 20 hours. Throw in Thursday Night Football and a high school game Friday Night. You've footballed your life away, my friend. They ought to move Lent so it comes during football season. It would do people some good. Maybe a Lent II.
