Beheadings

I'm not sure in what context beheadings are entertainment. Maybe there is one. I think they used to draw big crowds during the middle ages. During Henry VIII and French Revolution times I think they used to draw big crowds. I'm not sure what would cause the masses to come out and attend that kind of thing, but they did. I can't imagine it was considered comedy, though. Maybe a drama or just to see history being made if it was somebody famous like Anne Boleyn.

The "comedienne" Kathy Griffin did a mock beheading picture. It was a planned photo shoot, so she had plenty of time to think through it and perhaps reconsider. She seemed to think it was a good idea throughout. At least until there was the backlash, then she thought better of it. As apologies go, hers was pretty good. It seemed heartfelt and all. But when she said, "I was just mocking the mocker-in-chief", it took a bad turn. You really don't want to use the word "just" in an apology. And she seemed to be trying to turn it into something light-hearted. Generally speaking, beheadings are not light-hearted topics.

When you get into a war with Donald Trump and he is turning out to be the sympathetic figure, you've got major PR problem. Then the next day, she called a press conference to, I guess, gain sympathy for her. That didn't seem to work.

So many problems with how she handled this. I won't even try to list them all. My big concern is that, while she was clearly beyond the bounds of taste, there are a lot of "comedians" that do stuff something like this. Comedy now is just making fun of people. You have to pick the right people - ones that are politically correct to make fun of.

Johnny Carson and Bob Hope used to poke fun at the president. Nobody is poking fun anymore. It's all about ridicule. Its really more like bullying. That does get laughs. Playground bullies usually do their thing in front of audience so they can make fun of someone and get their buddies to laugh. That's what comedy has turned into. Kathy is just the worst example of it.
