It was tight, let me tell you. I won strikeouts. I think it was 109 to 107. I won in pitcher wins 8 to 7. I won rbi's by 1. I won three others, but by more substantial margins.
I had to watch the last few innings of Sunday Night baseball to make sure I had the win. The only player left for me or my opponent was Jackie Bradley Jr. of Boston. I was ahead by two rbi's. If he catches me I lose, and if he doesn't, I win.Bradley came up in the seventh inning with men on first and third. Oh-oh. He gets a single to drive in a run. I'm still ahead, but my cushion is gone. He comes up again in the 8th and is the lead off batter. He can only get an rbi by hitting a home run. He doesn't. He strikes out. Yes!!! And the Red Sox had the lead at that point, ironically, in part due to Bradley driving in that run earlier. So that actually helped me out when he did that. So all I need is for Boston to shut down the Yankees in the top of the 9th, then Boston wouldn't even come up to bat.
That indeed happened and I'm in the championship game now. Another tense two weeks for me. Actually, not that tense. It's just fantasy. Just kidding. This is huge. The first day was yesterday. Clayton Kershaw is probably the best pitcher in the world. He was pitching for my the other team. But my opponent made the egregious error of leaving him on the bench, so his stats for last night didn't count.
In spite of that, after Day 1 I'm slightly behind, but that's fine. Its early. And I'm OK if I lose. I have a long history of rooting for teams that make it to a championship game and then lose, e.g. Minnesota Vikings
, Portland Trailblazers, Oregon Ducks... But maybe, just maybe, we win this for the Gipper.
