Yorktown

Next on my trip was to what the Yorktown area. I went several places.

  • Yorktown, of course. I was there once but for like an hour or less. I spent most of the morning there this time. I got off on the wrong road. (I think the tour map's fault.) That set me back a little bit. It wasn't really much of a battle. It was a siege. Those are always a little boring. Cornwallis, who other than this time I think was a pretty successful general, got trapped. He went to the coast to get picked up by the British fleet. But instead, the French fleet was there. And Washington was in front of him on land. There was a lot of digging of trenches, some cannon fire, and then a surrender. Snore.
  • Fort Monroe. This was an important fort. Robert E. Lee helped build it. Its where they locked up Jefferson Davis after the Civil War. It was the starting off point for a lot of troops going to battle. It has a moat. An actual moat. How cool is that? Also from the top walls, you can look out and see where the Monitor and the Merrimack fought.
  • Douglas MacArthur museum. Cooler than I thought it would be. His grave was there along with stuff associated with him - pipe, hat, uniform, etc.
  • Jamestown and Williamsburg. I didn't go to these, but I wasn't planning on it anyway. I had been there before and they were OK, but not great sites. Jamestown doesn't really have buildings there anymore. Except for a few foundations, they don't exist. That is fine. I don't really like it when the rebuild buildings and they aren't the originals. Plus, no battles there, so what's the point.
  • Williamsburg is what Disney would do it they were in charge of history. They've got parades and demonstrations and people dressed up. I did drop by their gift store / book shop. If I could read fast enough and wasn't cheap, I could have spent a couple thousand dollars there, I bet.
