Lee headed east because its the only direction available to him. There were a series of skirmishes. Five Forks and Saylors Creek were a couple I stopped at.
Saylors Creek was a state park rather than a part of the national parks. It showed. The people giving information were just kind of hanging out and their map was good except east was west and west was east.
The South was running out of everything - food, men, ammunition. I drove about an hour to get to Appomattox, so they must have marched for about a week. I had been to Appomattox before, so some of it was a rerun. The McLean house where Lee surrendered is rebuilt, so I didn't think it would be that cool, but it looked just like the paintings so it turned out pretty cool. They had those paintings on display. I later saw "No Photgraphy" after I got in about a million great pictures. It also was fun the explore the area around the village, to see how surrounded the really were.
So back to Richmond for my final night and one more round of Waffle House.
