It isn't that hard to do well. Just take the higher seeded team and you should win over half the time. This year the higher seeded teams were 24 and 8. I did better at 25 and 7. Not a lot better, but better.
Main thing is my Ducks and Wildcats made it to the round of 32. That seems to be what the call it - "The round of 32". There is the championship game, the Final Four, the Elite Eight, and the Sweet Sixteen. They really didn't try very hard on the "round of 32". Somebody needs to work on that.
I called some upsets.
- I had Yale winning in a major upset. They had done well in football, and, hey, those Yale guys are smart. That has got to help.
- I had Gonzaga. I've seen the outside of their gym. It has a big old bulldog statue. The campus also has a Bing Crosby museum. He's an alumnus. None of that has a lot to do with basketball, but I feel like it all works together for good karma.
- I picked S.F. Austin. I don't know a lot about their team. In fact, I'm not sure I've heard of that college before. It was an inspired pick on my part.
- Hawaii over California. No offense, but what do Hawaiins do? (I don't know how to spell Hawaiins and my spell checker didn't even offer up any suggestions). I figure they're well rested. Luaus and basketball - that's all there is to do. (I spelled luaus right only because of my spell checker.) Do you know the Hawaiin (sp) language only has something like 12 letters in it. Think about it - Hawaii, Luau, Ohau, Lei, Aloha. Us mainlanders should dump a bunch of our letters.
I thought I was doing great, but just picking the higher ranked team would be a 75% winning percentage. I did ever so slightly better at 78%. So I can't really brag a whole lot. On to the round of 32.
(I was at a UK basketball game once. This is pretty much the view I had from my seat.)
