Turn out the lights (again),
The party's over (again),
They say that all good things must end.
Well, that didn't take long. Just a couple weeks after a soul crushing loss by my little Ducks, comes a Super Bowl loss by my Seahawks. I feel like I have a better perspective on these kinds of losses now, but they still sting. Especially losses like this. If you are going to lose in the playoffs, lose early. Don't lose the championship game. And as a new twist for me, don't do it in the final half minute.
I was prepared emotionally. While behind, I thought I would be alright with a loss. 1.) Seahawks won last year, 2.) Some of the Seahawk players are jerks, 3.) I don't hate the Patriots (I do now), and 4.) I'm ok with pretty boy Tom Brady. It was getting a little crowded with eveyone that has jumped on the bandwagon in the past year, anyway. Then while ahead by 10, I thought of the two, if I could only have one win, I would rather have it been the Ducks, but at least this will be nice. The football gods were just setting me up for the supreme disappointment.
Getting rid of the disappointment is something like disposing of a radioactive substance. In this case I think the half-life will be about 2 days. For a couple days there will be 100% disappointment. After 4 days there will be 50%. After 6 days 25%, and so on. At what point will it be gone? Oh, it won't ever be gone. There will always be a small amount of Uranium-238 in the pit of my soul after a loss like this.
Two days might be a little high. The half life might only be one day. Though I wanted it more, the Duck loss was easier because I didn't even watch the whole thing. It's as if it didn't happen. That final Seahawk interception is seared in my memory. I also watched some of the experts criticize the play call. The call was a good one, it just didn't work. Experts are stupid. So, I'll soon be in a pretty good spot. I feel bad for those hard core fans that are just dying right now. If friends can keep them from sharp objects through their first half-life, they'll probably be ok.
Let's check the standings. I thought maybe my luck was changing after last year's Super Bowl win. Now with a Kentucky basketball, Oregon football, and Seahawk football championship losses all in one year, I don't think so. I should feel lucky to have teams in that many championships, but remember rule one - If you're going to lose, lose early.
In college championships - 0 wins, 3 losses
Super Bowls - 1 win, 5 losses
NBA Finals - 1 win, 2 losses
World Series - 3 wins, 3 losses
Lifetime, I'm at a gut-wrenching 5 and 13. Not a very good record. All I've every wanted is to win all the time. Is that too much to ask?
