History Channel

The History Channel makes me sad. It's the kind of thing I would really like. At least it could be if they actually had history topics on it. They don't. They advertised a 6 hour mini-series (I'm not sure they're still called that) called the Sons of Liberty. I recorded it and everything. What a disappointment. The star was Samuel Adams. He was a real historical figure, but not they way they showed him. Within a minute I was thinking, is this Samuel Adams or Batman? He was fighting, climbing over rooftops - He was like a colonial robocop. This was a side of him I guess I wasn't aware of. They made John Hancock a wimp, which he wasn't. If not Washington, Hancock probably would have been the leader of the colonial army. I don't know if it got worse. I just watched the first hour. By watched, I mean I fast-forwarded through most all the fight scenes, of which there seemed to be a lot. There was more fighting than at Yorktown.

The History Channel was pretty proud of it I guess. They interrupted their usual all-day Pawn Stars marathon to show it. It seems they could do a little better. I subscribed to HBO once just to see their series on John Adams. That both were named Adams is really the only thing they had in common. The HBO show had a lot of talking, but that's mostly what they did. In they years leading up to the revolution I don't think there was a lot of violence. There was the Boston massacre in which a total of 5 people died. The word massacre was tacked on by the colonists as a PR move. It's too bad anyone died, but the word massacre seems to be a little over the top. And there also was the incident of throwing tea into the ocean - which is probably the lamest protest ever. So, I guess there wasn't enough action for the folks at the "History" Channel, so they had to create some. I thought it would be fun to watch since I was in Boston just a little while ago. It wasn't. I'll get over it.
