Here's a problem with my lawn. I realized my two prime interactions with my lawn is to water it and to mow it. It's not giving my a lot in return. I also spend too much time thinking about it. Should I fertilize it? Should I aerate it? I aerated it once. I'm not sure what that's supposed to accomplish, but I heard you should do it. I did hear on the Today Show once if you do certain things, you don't have to the big stuff.
1.) Don't cut the grass too short. That's traumatic for the grass.
2.) When you water, water quite a bit, so it goes deep into the soil.
3.) There was a number three, but I don't remember it. It was probably a biggy, though.
My lawn does look pretty good considering. I was away for a couple years and it did not get the special blend of loving care and apathy I usually give it. It didn't seem to get a whole lot of anything, especially water. The fact that it didn't get mowed wasn't a big issue as it didn't really grow very much. The need to mow is directly proportional to how much you water. I experimented with that one year. If I really cut back on the watering I get to also cut back on my mowing. Two birds with one stone. It had bad effects, so its the only year I did it.
My long term plan is to get rid of the lawn. I don't know how much it would cost, but maybe:
1.) Turn it into a putting green, or a very miniature golf course. I think I could get three holes out of it.
2.) Astroturf football field. It would be about 15 yards, but have yard lines marked in and my own logo in the end zone. (Note: come up with logo)
3.) Pave it and have a basketball court. A basket at each end.
All great ideas. Right now all plans are tied up in committee and will probably get vetoed anyway, but we'll see.
