I'm driving from Kentucky to Oregon. I thought I would blog it out over the next few weeks. The trip itself should take about a week, but I'll blog every two or three days, so it won't be happening in real time. I could drive it in well less than a week, but I'm not in any huge hurry and I'm going to take a few detours to hit some sights I might not see otherwise.
So here we go. First stop is Jefferson Davis' birthplace. It happened to be right on the way otherwise I doubt I would have bothered. Remember that he was the President of the Confederacy. There's strike one right there, but he was an important historical figure, so that makes him interesting. The house is long gone, but the spot is marked by a gigantic obelisk. It looks like the Washington Monument, but this one sitting out in the middle of farmland just looks really weird. Strike two. It also had a museum. I think it cost $5 and was contained in a single room. It seemed lacking in quality and quantity. The person running the place also didn't really seem into her job. Strikes 3, 4, and 5. You could pay to go up the elevator in the obelisk. However, once there, there really wouldn't be anything to see but fields. Anyway, this excursion only took 15 minutes of my day, so it was fine.
The most interesting part was after a few miles down the road I came to the intersection of Jefferson Davis Highway and Martin Luther King Avenue. I don't even know what to make of that. Its just quite interesting.
I also visited a Civil War Battlefield that day, but I've spent so much time trashing Jefferson Davis that I'll just save that for next time.
