TVA

I a show on the History Channel. First of all, it was refreshing that the History Channel had a program at least somewhat related to history. They managed to squeeze this show in between Pawn Stars marathons. I don't remember the exact title, but it was something about Appalachian Hillbillies. I am in the Appalachian region, but have not reached "hillbilly" status. Although I myself cannot be classified as such, I know a lot of them.

It was hosted by Billy Ray Cyrus. He did a good job. Its the first time I've thought that about him. I have disliked him for bringing two disturbing events into the world - Achy Breaky Heart and Miley Cyrus. But in this case - nice job.

I only saw the last 15 minutes and the segment I saw was about the Tennessee Valley Authority. I remember in school, in 5th grade I think, having to learn what all the New Deal initials meant - TVA, PWA, WPA, FDR, etc. I'm guessing that is one of those things that isn't taught anymore, but should be. I've been able to see some of the results of the TVA projects as I've driven around. This picture is in northern Tennessee, about 40 miles from me.

The TVA supplied a lot of jobs for the people here as the dams were being built and after they were built it supplied electrical power to the area. Overall a good deal. Its still a good deal, but the dams are all built and the coal industry has pretty much gone away, so poverty still abounds.
