Phyllis George

I was in Frankfort this last weekend. Its the capital of Kentucky and is a nice little town. It is the third smallest capital in the United States, so it doesn't have a big city feel. I've been there I think three times and I think I've done about everything there is to do there. There are quite a few cool things. Daniel Boone is buried there. A museum has a watch that was owned by Abraham Lincoln. It still runs. In fact they recorded it and used the sound in the movie for Abe's watch in the movie "Lincoln".

I think my favorite part was going through the Governor's mansion. Someone said we should walk over there and take the tour. I thought I would give it a shot to see if we could get in. No problem. Walked right in and had basically a private tour. It was fun. I don't want to be a governor, but I wouldn't mind living there. Its a short walk to work - the capitol is right across the street. It's not an enormous building, so it easy to take care of. And even if it isn't, that's cool, because you have a staff to do all that stuff. There were a number of Audubon paintings on the walls. That guy was really into birds.

The tour guide said a lot of the remodeling was done by Phyllis George when she was first lady of the state. I had forgotten all about that. I knew she married the governor of some state, but I didn't remember where. She's had a pretty cool life. She was a Miss America, was a sportscaster, TV personality, and a first lady. I remember she was one of the first female sportscaster. She deserves to be more well known than she is. I'll tell you the opposite of her - Someone that became very well known for doing almost nothing - Rosa Parks. I know people think a lot of her, but what did she do? She sat down on a bus and wouldn't get up. I'm sure she was a fine person. She just got a lot more mileage out of sitting down than most people do.
