The Winter Olympics are over. I probably watched more Olympics coverage this time that I ever had before. Part of that is because I just taped everything and then went back and watched the parts I wanted. At first I thought I'd watch the whole thing. I soon found that to be a bad idea. There must have been like ten hours a day of coverage. I did watch a lot of the skiing and the women's figure skating. I watched some of the luging and hockey. The most overrated event - the luge. I just don't see the skill in that. You need slightly more skill than what it would take to ride in the back seat of a car. Just jump in and hang on. I'm sure there must be more to it than that. I just don't know what it could be. The course is set, so they don't even have to steer. They probably explained what skill was involved in it beforehand, but I would have fast forwarded through that. I gained a greater appreciation for the figure skating. Those folks are real athletes. Mostly I watched hockey in fast motion until I saw people waving their sticks in the air. That meant there was a goal, so then I would rewind and watch the goal.
Don't think of me as unpatriotic or a communist, but I was rooting for Russia. Its like newspeople in the US were rooting for things to go wrong. Some of the hotels weren't ready, some of the water was brown, it was too warm, there could be terrorists... Oh boo hoo. The cold war is over. We don't have to root for Russia to fail anymore.
I'm also happy the US didn't get the most medals. I would just feel guilty about rooting for the all powerful US team. We've got so many people, the best training facilities, tons of money... Why wouldn't we win?Competing against Denmark, Finland, etc doesn't seem like a fair fight. So I'm almost always rooting for the other countries.
Actually, I think they should change things about how they run the Olympics. Each country should get to send a certain number of competitors and then when they get there, don't keep track of the countries. Don't were uniforms - wear whatever you want to compete in. And there is no playing the national anthem. The winner gets to have his or her favorite song played. All except Canadians. Canada has by far the best national anthem, so we should keep that one.
