The State of the Union

I'm watching the State of the Union speech as I write this. Its one of my favorite nights of the year. I guess that would make sense for someone that watches C-Span and C-Span 2 and is very disappointed that he doesn't get C-Span 3. Its kind of interesting seeing it at 9:00 p.m. rather than the 6:00 p.m. I'm used to. That is going mean stretching my bed time. I know admitting to having a early bedtime might make me sound a little nerdy, but I think the cat was out of the bag when I admitted my love for C-Span. I can do things like blog and drink a Coke, both of which I'm doing now, to help me stay alert. The bigwigs in the seats don't have that luxury. It must be toughest for the VP and the Speaker. They sit right behind the President, so their on-screen 90% of the time. They have nothing to do, but listen. I'm surprised they don't fall asleep.

*** Alert - Barak just made a joke comparing pizza dough to money as dough. Swing and a miss. ****

Its must be especially hard for John Boehner. The VP stays awake because he's always jumping up to applaud anything his buddy says. John doesn't seem to do as much of that. I like John Boehner. I talked to a worker at Henry Clay's house in Lexington. She said that John Boehner was there a couple weeks earlier to learn more about "The Great Compromiser". She said that he had a bunch of what looked like secret service guys with him. I didn't think he got that kind of protection. Anyway, she said he was a nice guy.

***Alert - Barak just gave a shout out to Kentucky's governor. ***

Its also fun to watch the standing ovations. As you face the president, the Democrats always sit on the left and Republicans on the right. That's why they're referred to as the left and the right in politics. Understandably, there is a lot more standing happening on the left side tonight. Although any president that wants to get a full standing ovation only has to say something about supporting our troops. That always seems to be an easy ovation line.

OK. We're about an hour into it now, Barak. Let's start summing things up. Just as I write this, I think he really is starting to sum up. Bed time, here I come.
