Cold

Yeah, it's cold. How cold is it? It's so cold I saw a dog frozen to a fire hydrant. (Thank you, Johnny Carson.) It's been hovering around zero and with the wind chill factor it's well below that. We had some snow a few days ago, but it doesn't melt, especially up in the hollers. We had school for about an hour and a half that day before being sent home. That's been it for the week. I've kind of lost track, but I think so far in 2014 we have had about 7.2 days of school out of a possible 16. I'm not really complaining. Its cold when I go outside, but I'm not going outside a lot.

About a week ago the President listed five places in the country that would be getting funds because of their level of poverty. Southeast Kentucky made the list. I would think the cold is a tough deal here for some of the families. There are a lot of old mobile homes that people live in in this area. I'm guessing they don't hold in the heat very well. In big cities there are shelters people can go to. Here, that really isn't an option.

One thing that is kind of interesting is that storm systems in the East are usually a big deal on news shows and the morning shows. Either the West coast doesn't get much weather or its not big news. I'm guessing it's the former. Aside from rain, there doesn't seem to be a lot of extremes of weather west of the Mississippi. Right now its the snow and the extreme cold, but at other times there are also hurricanes, floods and the occasional tornado.
