Game One has come and gone and its not looking good for St. Louis, but I predict they'll come back. Both teams have won plenty of World Series in the past, so its not a huge deal for either team. There's got to be a point of diminishing returns after so many. It seems unfair that they're both hoping to win another while my beloved Seattle Mariners have a great season if they win half their games. Unlike other teams, they do have the advantage of being able to count on having quality family time during September and October. It would be nice to see them in the playoffs occasionally, though.
As I wrote this, I thought I should look up the stats. It turns out my dismal memories are pretty much correct. In their 37 seasons only 11 times did they win more than they lost. They've never been to the World Series. And on top of that, I don't like their uniforms. Along with the additional family time, rooting for the Mariners gives the advantage of lowered expectations. There are no gut wrenching defeats like other teams have to deal with. Another loss is not a big deal. After all, it turns out we've had 3,153 of them already. What's one more.
I am glad that the Red Sox have won some Series in the past few years. For a long time they didn't win. Year after year it was, "Boo hoo. We never get to win. We always get close, but we don't win. We're jinxed. Every one feel sorry for us." Try being a Mariners fan. The Red Sox had nothing to complain about.
But the Red Sox finally did win, so they could finally stop crying. Now if only the Cubs would win, then they could stop complaining, too. I think we all know that's not going to happen anytime soon. They're already pretty close to being mathematically eliminated from the playoffs of the 2014 season. In fact, a great World Series would be Mariners vs. Cubs. That would be an awesome story.
