Pikeville Kentucky is really a delightful, peaceful town. That was the start of the day's adventure. The real feudin and fightin happened about 20 miles away on the Kentucky / West Virginia border. Generally, the McCoys lived on the Kentucky side and the Hatfields on the WV side. One highlight was getting to drive through West Virginia, which is a state I had never been in. I actually spent more time than I had planned due to taking some wrong turns. My GPS system, in my case that stands for Guessing Positioning System, got a little confused at times.
If you know the history or saw the mini-series, you'll know about the election fight and the hog trial. We saw that location and we saw where the Randall McCoy's cabin was. It actually is in a person's backyard. But the guy that owns it invites people to stop, he tells the history, and let people walk through his backyard to the location. That seemed weird someone would do that, but if I was him, I think I would do the same thing. He had a really nice house, so he doesn't need the money. He just wants to share that history with others I guess.
We saw where Devil Anse Hatfield is buried. It was a major hike up a hill to get to it, but well worth it. Whether it was given to you by your parents or its a nickname, being called "Devil" has got to affect your world view. I think if I had been named "Hitler", my life might have turned out differently. If he was Clarence Hatfield, maybe there wouldn't even been a feud.
