Top 100 in Music

I should have had a little party or something for my 200th blog. I missed it. I noticed it said this is #202. Sad. It's like when you look at the speedometer on your car and it says, 100,000.4 miles. I have 4,900 "page views". I don't keep track of those statistics. I guess that's why I missed it.

So, continuing with my critique of Entertainment Weekly's top 100 of everything. This time its music. There is a disturbing number of these musical acts listed that I've never heard of. There is music I don't like, but I at least should have heard of them. The list is longer if I include the ones I've heard of, but have no idea what they sound like. Let's look at their top 10.

1. Revolver - The Beatles. Nice choice. I would go either that or Abbey Road (which was #22 on their list).  By the way, I've walked on the Abbey Road crosswalk. I need to find the picture I have of it to prove it. It is surprisingly high on my list of greatest things I've ever done.

2. Purple Rain - Prince. The first of many albums on this list that at best I've heard a few songs from.

3. Exile on Main Street - The Rolling Stones. The most overrated band in history.

4. Thriller - Michael Jackson. Good choice.

5. London Calling - The Clash. ????????????

6. Blood on the Tracks - Bob Dylan. I think I do a great Bob Dylan impression, incidentally.

7.  Lady Soul - Aretha Franklin. I've mentioned one of my friends in junior high called her Urethra Franklin. We thought that was funny. Looking back on that now, probably not.

8. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West. It was only in the past year that I learned how to pronounce his name.

9. Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys. I've seen them twice. Once they did a concert at the conclusion of a SF Giant game I was at. I suppose they had announced that ahead of time, but I didn't know it. That was a shocking and nice surprise. They sound great in small doses. If you listen to them for an hour or more. your nervous system starts to rebel.

10. Nevermind - Nirvana. Appropriately named.

Here are other names on their top 100 - Daft Punk, The Notorious BIG, Wu-Tang Clan, Jay-Z, The Cure, OutKast, LCD Soundsystem, The Smiths, The Flaming Lips, A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Arcade Fire, De La Soul, Television, Love, Hole, Iggy and the Stooges, Pixies, Pavement, PJ Harvey, New Order, The White Stripes, Sleater-Kinney, NWA, Elliot Smith, Erykah Badu.

Exactly how far from the herd have I wandered if I haven't even heard of these guys. Is it possible I am not as hip as I think I am?
