Les Miserables

One of my few forms of entertainment for the next few weeks will be DVD's I already one and ones rented from Red Box. I watched Les Miserables. I am proud to say that, thanks to three years of French in high school, I can pronounce the title correctly. I can also count to 10 in French and know several barnyard animals. That's pretty much all I learned from three years of French. If I'm every on a Parisian farm and a census is needed of their animals, I am ready.

I like music and I like history. I'm not sure if I like them in combination. That seems weird. In real life I don't see people spontaneously breaking into song. And I think that especially unlikely when you are getting shot at or chased. When I walk through a town, I don't see cops dancing on garbage cans. Why is it ok to do that in a play or a movie. It seems weird.

I read the book several years ago. I got it as a present, otherwise I don't think I would have. It was a big, big book that had Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame in it. Both were written by Victor Hugo. I really liked them both. Hunchback in underrated I think. When you see anything about it now, its in a joking or cartoon way. Its really a good book. A lot of the old books have important moral lessons you can learn. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

A couple weeks ago I read The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain. I remember seeing part of a movie of that in elementary school. I don't know why I just saw part. Maybe I fell asleep. That is quite likely. Anyway, I thought I owed it to Mark to read it. But after I read it I realized I read a lot of stuff because I think I should. I should read those classic books I've always heard of. I'm done doing that. I don't really like fiction anyway. I have some books that give like two page summaries of all the classics. If I want to "read" a book, I'll read that summary. They say people that do that know as much about the book as people that read every word. I'll still read history and biography books. That's the stuff I really like anyway. As long as there isn't any singing included.
